Patient Participation Groups (PPGs)
Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) are a unique partnership between patients, GPs and their practice that is essential to and results in high quality, responsive care.
PPGs are:
- Patients working with a practice to improve services
- Varied to suit local needs and;
- Based on cooperation
PPGs meet to discuss how the practice is working; what is going well and what could be improved.
PPG members often request changes to the way the practice operates and carry out pieces of work to help improve patients' experience.
PPGs determine their own activities according to the needs of the community and the practice itself. Examples of the work PPGs have taken part in include changes to the phone and new appointment systems, patient surveys and the promotion of local health campaigns with Public Health. Members meet every four to six weeks and correspond via email in between meetings.

NHS Halton CCG meet with members of the PPGs for a PPG Plus meeting. The PPG Plus is a network that brings together representatives of individual PPGs to share best practice, discuss how they can work together and discuss how they can support the CCG workstreams

Diane McCormick, Chair PPG Plus Halton
"After retirement I decided to give some of my time to supporting local NHS services. I am currently chair of Appleton Village Surgery Patient Participation Group (PPG) as well as chair of PPG Plus which involves all the GP practices in Halton. I am also a member of the Halton Healthwatch Advisory Board and Public Governor of Bridgewater Community NHS Foundation Trust.
My family and I have lived in Widnes all our lives and I feel that my local knowledge of the area and its history helps me in supporting our NHS in engaging with Halton residents on health-related topics.
My professional background includes working as a radiographer at Whiston Hospital and systems manager for ICI occupational health in the North West and North East of England."
